Science in Divine Word 2010/2011
DISCOVER PRIMARY SCIENCE and MATHS AWARD
BT YOUNG SCIENTIST
Ms
Mullin's 4th class took part in the B.T. Young Scientist Exhibition recently.
They received an award and were highly commended for a fantastic
project entitled 'healthy hearts and lively lungs'. The children explored
how both the heart and lungs work. They also compiled a questionnaire to
assertain how much exercise the children were taking. They became involved in
lots of activities to make exercise fun while trying to improve their fitness
levels. They made models of hearts and
lungs and an 'electric quiz' to check how much people know about the
subject. Everyone had a great day at the R.D. S. Congratulations to Ms.
Mullin and the class on all the hard work. We are very proud of them. The
support from parents was very much appreciated.
Mr Caesy's Chemistry lesson
Mr Mike Casey, a lecturer in U.C.D. gave a series of workshops to the 4th and 6th classes on Thursday 27th January. The children learned about chemistry in a fun and interactive way. They got the opportunity to design their own chemical reactions using molecule models. We appreciate the time Mr Casey took, to work with the children in our school.
Science Experiments
The children brought in a science experiment into the school on Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday 26th of January. The children demonstrated the
experiments to their own class. The experiments were displayed on the corridors
around the school. Parents were welcome in to visit the school to look at the
experiments.
SCIENCE IRELAND
Declan from ‘Science Ireland’ visited the school for a series
of workshops on flight, sound, electricity and light. The children from junior
infants to sixth class had a fantastic time.
The children from Ms O’Brien and Mr Conlon’s second classes had a great day in Airfield House. They participated in a ‘Discover Primary Science’ day. The children studied habitats, life cycles, food chains and webs as well as food and farming and much more. Thanks to Ms.Gaffney for accompanying the classes on the day.
