Whole school PE Plan

After applying for our first ever Active School flag, we decided as a staff to review our whole school PE plan. The Active Committee got together over a few days and reviewed and updated our policy. We decided as a staff to focus on the strand of gymnastics this year. The Active Committee have organised CPD in this area and all teachers will be trained by professional gymnasts from Olympian Gymnastics.

PE Timetable

Every class has been timetabled for at least two 30-minute P.E slots per week. These slots guarantee that the hall is available for each class at their allocated time. Teachers often choose to do P.E outside, if the weather is nice. We are very fortunate to have many playing fields, local greens and parks as well as a basketball court to avail of for P.E lessons.

PE Equipment

We are very fortunate here in Divine Word to have a very well stocked PE equipment room. Ms. Mahony organised for new equipment to be ordered at the beginning of the school year. The Student Council are responsible for ensuring the equipment room is kept clean and orgainsed.

Local Amenities

We are very grateful to the following organisations who allow us use these local amenities:

St Enda's Park, Leicester Celtic Football Club, DLR Meadowbrook Swimming Pool, DLR Marley Park and Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club.

Gymnastics Training

We chose to focus on the strand of gymnastics this year. As part of our continuous professional development in this area, we have organised for Olympian Gymnastics club to visit the school for eight full days during March and April. All the classes in the school will get coaching sessions to develop their gymnastic skills, while teachers will get an opportunity to improve their skills, teaching gymnastics.

PAWS Water Safety Programme

A number of our classes are completing the PAWS Water Safety Programme. This is a programme created by Water Safety Ireland to teach children basic water safety skills, in the classroom.

Fundamental Movement Skills

Fundamental movement skills include locomotive skills (walking, running, hopping, skipping, jumping, dodging and side stepping), stability skills (balancing and landing) and manipulative skills (catching, throwing, kicking, striking). The development of these skills are encouraged through drills and games in a fun manner.

Active School Noticeboard

After we applied to start the Active Flag process, we decided to set up an ‘Active School Noticeboard’. The purpose of this noticeboard is to keep teachers and students informed about all things active that are happening in the school. We also included a suggestions box, so that the children can pass on any ideas they may have, to help make our school even more active!

Survey: What Club are you in?

Our Active Committee conducted a survey of our 3rd to 6th classes, to find out what clubs they are members of, outside of school. We were delighted to learn that our children are members of 62 different clubs, ranging from GAA, soccer, dance clubs, gymnastics, golf, tennis and basketball to karate, rock climbing and even ice skating! It is fantastic to hear that our pupils are involved in so many sports and activities!

We added the results of our survey to the school website and Twitter page, so that any parents or children looking to join activities would have a comprehensive list of tried and tested clubs and activities that come highly recommended by the children themselves.
