Trophies and Triumphs for Divine word girls Camogie

As you all know Divine word school Camogie team made it to Croke park on Monday the 10th of June this year. We started the day with War paint and plaits courtesy of Mrs Hayes. Then we all headed to the buses with a guard of honour cheering us on. The atmosphere on the bus was ecstatic and was filled with chants and laughter but the nerves were running high. Entering the stadium was like living a childhood dream. We ‘climbed the steps of the Hogan stand’ and watched the boys finish at half time on a draw. But we had to leave to prepare for the biggest match of our lives so far. As we walked onto the pitch we saw the boys hoisting the trophy. The pressure was on, but our nerves were settled when our Captain won the coin toss. After much advice from our coaches we were ready, the match had begun………

Within a minute Naithí had scored a jammy dodger sandwich with peanut butter on top goal. Our hopes deflated rapidly but we picked ourselves up with a great goal from Maisy white and a point from Ciara kellegher. Sadly they got a point to make it level at the stroke of half time.

With an inspirational speech from our captain we went out with high hopes and we sure lived up to them with a further 2 points and 2 goals courtesy of Aoife Sneyd (1-o) Holly Mcanerny (1-0) and Ciara Kellegher (0-2). And after a long fought second half that glorious final whistle blew. The final score was 3-3 to 1-2, we had won. We jumped for joy with many tears shed. After the trophy and medal presentation many pictures were taken. We headed back on the bus and had a wonderful party at the Johns clubhouse. We would like to give many thanks to Mrs Hayes for doing our amazing hair and to Helen and Barbara for organising the party afterwards and most importantly our coaches Mr O’Connell and Mr Conlon for everything They have done for us this Camogie season. Croke Park Boys Final
Croke Park Boys Final

On Monday the 10th of June our school team played the hurling final in Croke park. It was a very close match against worthy opponents. Our opponents were Chnoc Liamhna. On the morning of the match our class were split up. The morning felt very long and tense because we were all very apprehensive myself and Evan were in Ms O’Brien’s class and the only work we got done was our mental maths and we did Zumba with Ms Graham. We ate lunch and then we went to the hall and Mr Williams wished us good luck and then we went on the bus to Croke park. The atmosphere was electric on the bus Alavro was leading the chants. Most of the journey was swift except for one road which took about 20 minutes to get down because of the traffic. When we got to the stadium we sat down and started watching another match. One of their players was quite skilful and we were all begging to feel increasingly nervous for our oncoming match.

After a while we were called to our dressing room where everyone prepared for the match. We walked out of the dressing room and walked onto the pitch and started our warm-up on the pitch. However, a photographer came up and took our team photo. Then the match got underway the match was tight the whole way through. In the last minute one of their players made a clean catch, turned around and struck the ball sweetly and the suspense was unbearable but he hit the crossbar and we all let out a sigh of relief as Tadhg scored the winning point. As the final whistle blew our team all shouted wildly cause we had won the game by one point.

Many thanks to our astounding coaches Mr Reilly and Mr Timmons we couldn’t have done it without you.

Evan, Tom and Oisín.

School girls soccer league begins…

The girls started their campaign with nil all draw. The girls played soccer in Marley Park on Wednesday the 20th of March. They were playing against Taney primary school.  The girls played valiantly against the opponents but neither could score a goal against each other. Our striker Grace in 6th class was awarded player of the match for her determination  on and off the Ball. Although Graces triumph, it was a close one between everyone who played on our side. The girls now look forward to their next match against Taney on the 1st of April.

3-points up for the girls!

The game kicked off in Leicester Celtic at  2:45 last Monday the 1st of April to see who would win the 3 points for the league. It was the girls vs Mt.Anville. It was close for the first few minutes of the match but then the girls came out on top after Grace scored a goal from Alice’s Cross. There were lots of opportunities for us to get ahead. From that point on things just got better and we ended up scoring two more goals and winning 3-1. Mt.Anville fought hard to scrape back the Victory but because of our solid back line they only managed to lob 1 past us. The player of the match for our side was Sinead and Rachel for their extreme effort on the pitch.

3 Out of 4 games played

It was an unfortunate result for our girls yesterday the 9th of April When they played St.Attractas down in Nutgrove Park.  Although the score line was 2-0 It doesn’t display the effort shown on the day by the Divine Word girls. The other team went 2 up in the first half, and although we tried to change the tides in the second half, our sheer hard work and determination was prevented by St.Attractas that did well to keep us out. It was a great team effort by all but we will go again in two weeks time after Easter where we are due to play Loreto Crumlin.
