Divine Word School, Marley Grange

Dear Parents/Guardians 4th December 2015

Wow!! It’s nearly Christmas again—Angels, Shepherds, Wise Men, Marys, Josephs, Donkeys and a few Santas will soon be heading to the school with parents and grandparents bearing cameras and digital camcorders. We are all looking forward to the festive season here in the school and already the children are getting excited as Santa’s visit to the Divine Word NS approaches.

We would like to congratulate Ms Flynn on her recent marriage and to Ms Hynes and Mr Mangan who will be celebrating their marriage on January 23rd. We wish Ms Murphy all the best as she commences her maternity leave and welcome back Mr Nolan who is replacing Ms Murphy. Congratulations to Ms Gallaher on the recent birth of her baby boy, Leo.

Our thanks also to Sr Veronica who continues to assist us with learning support and the development of our school’s sacred space.

On a sadder note we wish to convey our condolences and sympathy to Mrs MacMahon, S.N.A. on the recent death of her father, Patrick Ward (RIP).

We have lots of news and a few dates for your diaries:

Cake Sale – October 16th

Well done to our two 6th classes who made a total €2,253 on this year’s charity cake sale.

Thank you all for your baking and donation of cakes. The chosen charities were UNICEF Syrian Refugee Appeal and Simon Community and a cheque will be presented to them at our school assembly next term. Thanks also to Ms Hayes and Mr Mangan, Mrs Nolan and Mrs McGrath for all their help in organising the event. Well done Rang 6 !!

Budding Reviewers:

Well done to Aobh Chambers (4th) and Devin Brady (3rd) who gave a wonderful review of Michael Morpurgo‘s book “An Eagle in the Snow” on a recent edition of the RTÉ Radio 1 programme “Today with Sean O’Rourke”. It was broadcasted on November 2nd so it may still be available on RTÉ Radio Player.

Congratulations to Anna Suttle (5th Class) who recently won a gold medal in the 100m Breaststroke at the Leinster Swimming Gala.

A BIG thank you also to Carol, our GAA coach from St John’s who continues to provide coaching to children in the school. Well done to all our boys and girls football and soccer teams who performed so well this term. Special “Míle Buíochas” to their coaches Ms Mullin, Mr Conlon, Mr Reilly, Mr Timmons, Mr O’Connell also Ms Hynes and Mr Mangan.

Sam visits Divine Word NS:

On November 11th we were very honoured to welcome the Sam Maguire to the school, along with Dublin player, Nicky Devereux, and Carol our GAA coach from St John’s GAA Club. A BIG thank you to the Dublin GAA and to St John’s for organising this visit.

Flag Presentation – November 16th

The Defence Forces recently presented the National Flag and a copy of ‘The Proclamation’ to the school as part of the Centenary Programme to commemorate the 1916 Rising. We were very proud to welcome Captain Gemma Fagan, a past pupil of the school and Corporal Graham Fitzgerald who presented both items to members of our Students Council and Green Schools Committee. It is fair to say that one of the best questions which came from one of our Infants was “What’s it like playing at Soldiers?”…..

Christmas Fair:

Many thanks to our Parents’ Association and to all who helped and contributed to our Christmas Fair on Sunday November 22nd. The money raised goes a long way to enhancing the development of the curriculum for the children in the school. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the school for this year’s Fair and we would like to thank our P.A. Committee especially the Chairperson Hazel Mander for all her help, energy and organisation together with all the volunteers. Thanks also to the various sponsors for prizes and advertisements. A special “Míle Buíochas” to our musical ensemble and to Ms Ní Threasaigh who provided a musical interlude and to the Dublin Saxophone Quartet for their fabulous musical contribution.

Inter Schools Maths Challenge:

Congratulations to Jaycee Capinpin, Taiga Murray, Maeve Conroy and Brendan Kearns who won the Inter Schools Maths Challenge Cup on November 24th. Well done also to their teachers Mr Mangan and Ms Hayes.

New Board of Management:

The B.O.M. in the school has now entered another four year cycle. The term for this new Board will be December 1st 2015 to November 30th 2019. We would like to especially thank our outgoing parent nominees, John Nathan and Martina Dempsey for all their hard work and dedication to the school. We also congratulate our new parent nominees, Peter Leonard and Ruth Cronin, and wish them well with their work over the next four years. Our thanks also to Mrs Kernan who served as our teacher nominee and congratulations to Ms Murphy who was recently elected as the new teacher nominee to the Board.

Voluntary Subscriptions:

Many thanks to those of you who have sent in Voluntary Subscriptions. Once these arrive in the school they are sent on to the Treasurer of our Board of Management in batches.

It may therefore take a few weeks for an acknowledgement, so please be patient.

These subscriptions are of great help to the school. This year we will receive approx. €84,830 from the Department of Education to fund cleaning, light, heat, insurance etc.. This is a reduction in previous year’s grants. Your voluntary subscription is of great help to keep our school running well on a daily basis and to provide a stimulating and comfortable environment for the children. Many thanks.

Library Assistants

A BIG thank you to the parents, Ann O’Regan, Zeena Ali, Sinéad Kelleher and Simon Suttle who have been helping with our library classifications and ‘tidy up’. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Junior Infant Applications:

Junior Infant application forms for the school year 2016/2017 are now available from the school office or on our school website . The closing date for applications is Friday January 29th and 1st round offers will be made by February 26th.

Junior Infant Classrooms:

We would ask parents/guardians of Junior Infants not to accompany your child into the classroom in the mornings. By now the children have settled into a routine and are able to enter the classroom on their own. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

School Closing Times:

The Board of Management wishes to remind you that parents and children should leave the school premises once classes have been dismissed. Please do not congregate in the yard after school.

We would like to remind you once again to respect the traffic lines/signs around the school and to drive with caution on all approaches to the school in order to provide a safe environment.

Birthday Invitations and Cakes:

We would ask that birthday invitations not be distributed by children in the classrooms.

We would also advise that birthday cakes should not be sent into school.

Our School Website:

Please log onto our school website: for the latest news, information and copies of our newsletter. Our thanks to Ms McGrane for updating our website.

Santa’s Visit:

Our Parents’ Association has written to Santa in the North Pole to ask him to visit all the hard working children in the school. They recently got a reply so he has decided to visit us on Monday 21st December. I know that both children and teachers will be looking forward to this visit!!

And finally…….On behalf of myself and all the staff in the Divine Word School, I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas. We look forward to working with you and your child(ren) again in 2016 !!
