December Newsletter

Yes!  It’s Christmas agus beidh Daidí na Nollag ag teacht go luath! A number of naughty Elves have already been spotted!!  We are all looking forward to the festive season here in the school and already the children are getting excited as Santa’s visit to the Divine Word NS approaches – and we even have evidence of an elf hiding in the school, on a number of classroom shelves and in my office!!

Our thanks to Sr. Veronica who on a voluntary basis continues to assist us with learning support and the development of our school’s sacred space. A special “thank you” also to Jennifer and Barbara our school secretaries, John, our school caretaker and Paula our tea lady for their invaluable work during the year.

Congratulations to Ms Frawley who recently was a member of the winning Ladies Team in the F.A.I. Cup Final.

A special congratulations to the chairperson of the Board of Management, Prof. Dáire Keogh, on his appointment as President of Dublin City University (DCU).  I know he will being energy and enthusiasm to this position and we wish him well.

We have lots of news and a few dates for your diaries:


Christmas Concerts:      

We will be holding our annual Carol Service in the Church on Wednesday, December 11th at 7.30pm.  Ms Hynes and Mr Timmons’s 5th classes will be leading us in our Carol Service. The children from 3rd, 4th and 6th classes will be singing. You are all welcome to attend and join in on the night.  We will be holding a number of festive events in the school hall.

The school will close on Friday, December 20th at 12 noon and will re-open on Monday, 6th January 2019 at 8.50am.

Cake Sale – October 17th  

Well done to our two 6th classes who made a total €2,242.50 on this year’s charity cake sale.  Thank you all for your baking and donation of cakes.  The chosen charities were Epilepsy Ireland, Diabetes Ireland and iCAN – Irish Children’s Arthritis Network and a cheque will be presented to them at our school assembly. Thanks also to Ms Gallaher, Mr Reilly and Mrs Nolan, and all who were involved for their help in organising the event.   Well done Rang 6!!


Christmas Discos

Many thanks to our hard working PA who organised three successful school discos in the school hall.  Everyone had a very enjoyable time and thanks to all those parents who volunteered to be “bouncers”.


Bag Packing

Many thanks to all our parents and children volunteers who recently helped at our bag pack in Supervalu in Churchtown.  Please keep your eyes open for future bag packs.


Student Council

Thank you to our Student Council for all their hard work this year and to their co-ordinators Ms. Pigott and Mr. Mangan.


Green Schools

Our Green Schools Committee continue to help keep the school a Green one and I would like to thank them and their co-ordinator Ms. Larkin for all their hard work.


National Concert Hall November 26th

Many congratulations to our 4th class Choir who took part in a night of festive music and song with the Rathfarnham Concert Band.  We were extremely proud of our Choir who combined with the Choirs of Loreto High School Beaufort, Loreto Primary School Rathfarnham, St Mary’s BNS and Ballyroan Boys’ National School.  Many thanks to Ms. McDonnell, Ms Larkin, Mr O’Connell and Ms McGrath for all their help and assistance during rehearsals and on the night.  Above all a BIG congratulations and míle buíochas to Ms Ní Threasaigh who not only conducted the Choirs on the night but produced the entire performance.  A school full of talent!!



Well done to our boys and girls GAA and Soccer teams who did so well in their respective Cumann na mBunscol leagues this term.  A special thanks to all those parents who assisted with transport and to Mr Reilly,

Mr Timmons, Mr O’Connell, Mr Conlon, Mr. Fallon, Ms. Frawley and Ms Hynes, their ever dedicated coaches.


Library Assistants

A BIG thank you to parents, Simon Suttle, Sinéad Kelleher, Susan O’Keeffe, Ruth Cronin and Tanya Cunningham who have been helping with our library classifications and ‘tidy up’.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Please also ensure that we have an up to date email address and phone number in order to contact you.  It is also important that emergency phone numbers are kept up to date.  Please contact Jennifer or Barbara in the school office.

Junior Infant Applications:

Junior Infant application forms for the school year 2020/2021 are now available from the school office or on our school website .  The closing date for applications is Friday January 10th and 1st round offers will be made by end of January 2019.


Maths Week

Well done to all our children and teachers who took part in our 2019 Maths week.  A particular congratulations to all who took part and are continuing to take part in our MangaHigh Maths challenge.  This has been a very successful programme for those taking part.  Thanks to our Maths co-ordinator Ms. Mahony for her hard work in this area.


Soccer Tournament

Many congratulations to our 6th class soccer team who won the recent Rockbrook Soccer Blitz by beating Ballyroan BNS 4 – 1 in the final.


Anti-Bullying Committee

Our Anti Bully Committee met recently to update our policy in light of the visit last May of Dr. Liam Challenor of the Anti-Bullying Unit in DCU.  Many thanks to our committee of Mr. Williams (Principal), Ms. NíThreasaigh (Deputy Principal), Ms Mahony (Teacher), Ms Gallaher (Teacher), Hazel Mander (Parent), Susan O’Keefe (Parent) and Peter Leonard (Parent and member of the Board of Management).


Junior Infant Classrooms:

We would ask parents/guardians of Junior Infants not to accompany your child into the classroom in the mornings.  By now the children have settled into a routine and are able to enter the classroom on their own and carrying their own bags.   We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.


Yard in the Mornings

We would remind children and parents to adhere to our “lining up” system in the school yards in the mornings and to keep away from the flower beds.


School Closing Times:

The Board of Management wishes to remind you that parents and children should leave the school premises once classes have been dismissed.  Please do not congregate in the yard after school.


We would like to remind you once again to respect the traffic lines/signs around the school and to drive with caution on all approaches to the school in order to provide a safe environment.  We would also ask you to not park in the designated pedestrian areas in the church car park.


Birthday Invitations and Cakes:

We would ask that birthday invitations not be distributed by children in the classrooms.  We would also advise that birthday cakes should not be sent into school. REMEMBER: we are a NUT FREE school.

Santa’s Visit:

Our Parents’ Association has written to Santa in the North Pole to ask him to visit all the hard working children in the school. They recently got a reply so he has decided to visit us on Thursday, December 19th Ho! Ho! Ho!!  I know that both children and teachers will be looking forward to this visit!!
