Divine Word School, Marley Grange

Dear Parents/Guardians 24th June 2019

Once again we have come to the end of another school year and as we approach it I would like to thank you all – parents, staff and children – for making this another happy and successful year in the Divine Word School.

Before the end of the school year is upon us I would like to wish Mr Reilly the very best for his wedding in July and to Ms Pigott who will also be getting married in early July. I would also like to wish Ms Flynn well as she commences her maternity leave and to congratulate her on the recent birth of her son. I would like to thank Ms Graham and Mr Fallon for covering our leave of absences over the past months.

We wish Ms Murphy and Ms Hayes all the best as they commence a job-sharing arrangement for the next school year.

As we come to the end of another fruitful and busy school year we would like to wish our two 6th classes the very best of luck as they move on to Secondary schools.

The school will close at 12 NOON on Friday 28th June for the summer holidays and will re-open on Thursday August 29th at 8.50am (9.30am for NEW Junior Infants).

6th Class Graduation:
Our 6th class graduation will take place on Thursday June 27th at 7.30pm in the Church. All are welcome to the school hall afterwards for refreshments kindly provided by the Parents’ Association.

Zero Absences:
Congratulations to all those pupils who received zero absence awards this year – 73 in total.
Our attendance record for the year was 97%. Well done to parents and children.

‘Signing Out’:
I would like to remind you that children must be ‘signed out’ at Reception if leaving the school during the day. This must be done by a parent or responsible adult over 18 years of age and who is known to the school. I would also like to remind you that older siblings under the age of 18 can collect children from school with written permission from their parents.

Passport Forms:
If you require passport forms signed, please ensure you make an appointment with the school office. Please also note that both parents/guardians must be present to sign their section of the form as the Passport Office do random checks that signatures were witnessed by the Principal.

Past Pupils:
Many congratulations to all our past pupils who received awards and prizes in many of the secondary schools in the area.

Language and Literacy Curriculum:
During the next school year we will be continuing to introduce the new Language and Literacy Curriculum encompassing both English and Irish. The teaching staff in the school have already received In-service days on the oral language, writing and reading strands of the curriculum from Junior Infants to 2nd class. Further details can be found on or We are also re-engaging in the School Self Evaluation (SSE) process with a specific focus on oral Irish and will be incorporating this curriculum into our deliberations and planning.

School Library:
We would like to thank our cohort of parent volunteers who have been working hard in our school library. We thank Simon Suttle, Sinéad Kelleher, Ruth Cronin, Tanya Cunningham and Susan O’Keeffe. Míle Buíochas also to Ms Ní Threasaigh for all her hard work in co-ordinating this project.

Library Books and Class Readers:
We would ask that you do a search of the house to see if you have any school library books or supplementary readers lying around. If so, could you return them to the class teacher as soon as possible.

Feis Maitiú:
Many congratulations to all our winners in the Feis Maitiu…too many to mention!!
Well done to their drama teacher, Ms Croine Flaherty.

Santry Sports:
Many congratulations to our Boys Under 12s who won the Gold Cup and Medals in the relay race and to our Under 11s mixed relay team who won Bronze. Congratulations also to Grace Prenter winning Bronze in the Under 13s 600m race and Rebecca Gilna who won Silver in the U12s Hurdles. A big thank you to all their coaches, Ms. Dempsey, Ms. Casey, Mr. Lynch, Ms. Larkin & Ms. Frawley.

A big congratulations to our Girls Camogie team and our Boys Hurling team who did the “double” in Croke Park this year. It was a tremendous achievement and thanks to all our supporters who turned up on the day. A big thank you to their hard working coaches Mr Conlon, Mr O’Connell, Mr Timmons, Mr Reilly and to Ms D Hayes who assisted on the day!

A Big Congratulations to our Senior Boys team who beat Larkhill NS 2 – 0 in their Dublin League Final. A Fantastic Game!! A big thank you to their coaches Mr Mangan, Ms Hynes, Mr O’Connell, Mr Heuston, and Ms Frawley.

Community Games:
Well done to all our pupils who took part in this year’s Community Games – a big congratulations to all our Trophy and medal winners!

Sports Days:
We were very lucky this year with the weather on our Sports Days. Both days were a tremendous success thanks to the hard work and co-operation of our teaching staff.
A special thanks to all the teachers for organising both days and a special Go Raibh Maith Agaibh to our Parents’ Association for organising the fruit for our athletes. Well done to those Mammies and Daddies who took part in the parents’ race.

Active School Week:
This year we had a wonderful Active Schools Week and with good weather to accompany it as well. Children experienced Zumba workouts as well as Tennis demonstrations. Many thanks to
Ms Casey and all our teachers for organising such a successful week.


Many thanks to Ms. Mary Glynn of DCU who continues to provide mindfulness workshops for the children in the school.

Spelling Bee
Many congratulations to Maya Drum (5th Class) who represented us so well in the Spelling Bee competition. Thanks to Ms Hynes for organising this event.

Short Story Competition
Congratulations to Anna Butterly who was runner-up in the RTE children’s Short Story competition – a great achievement.

Quiz Teams
Well done to our Credit Union Quiz team and the South Dublin Library Quiz team who represented us so well this year. Special congratulations to our U13 team who participated in the National Final in the RDS. Many thanks to their coaches Mr Timmons, Ms Gallaher, Ms Hayes and Mr O’Connell.

International Day:
Many thanks to all who were involved in our recent International day. Families from different nationalities put on a wonderful display in the school hall. A particular thank you to Ms Larkin who organised the event.

Anti-Bullying Workshop:
Many thanks to all who attended our Parent’s Workshop on bullying given by Dr. Liam Challenor of Anti-Bullying Unit in DCU. Dr Challenor also gave workshops to the teachers and pupils in the school. Many thanks to our behaviour co-ordinator Ms. Ní Threasaigh for organising this event.

Parents’ Association:
We would like to thank most sincerely our Parents Association who did so much fundraising for us during the year. The P.A. presented the school with a cheque for €35,000 for extra school resources. At their recent AGM they also presented a cheque for €5,000 towards the Special Education Department in the school. We would like to thank the outgoing Chairperson Ms Ingrid Miller for all their support and hard work during the year and congratulate the new committee also under the leadership of Ingrid. We look forward to the continued support and co-operation of the P.A. in the next school year.

Sr Veronica:
We would also like to thank Sr Veronica for her endless devotion to the children in the school. As you know, Sr Veronica retired some years ago yet she continues to provide Learning Support to a number of classes in the school. She also helps with numerous religious activities during the year. Míle Buíochas Sr Veronica!

Lost Property:
We have lots of unclaimed lost property in the school. Please call to the school to see our caretaker John, before the end of the school year to claim any lost jumpers, tracksuit tops and jackets.

Student Council:
A special thanks to all the members of our Student Council who did Trojan work during the year. Well done to their mentors, Ms Larkin and Ms Hayes.
