Divine Word School, Marley Grange
Dear Parents/Guardians 14th March 2016
We are now approaching the season of Easter, the celebrations around the Easter Rising and Proclamation and the arrival of the Easter bunny. It seems a long time since we were making our way to the school hall and church for our Christmas celebrations…. and now…. Here we are preparing for our National Day and celebrations around a National Historic event. There are a number of items we would like to inform you of and some dates for your diaries !!
We would firstly like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the late Maura Concannon (RIP). Maura was the first Deputy Principal in the Divine Word School and dedicated nearly 40 years of her life to teaching children of all levels. Maura retired from the school in 2004 yet she was always in contact with the school and loved to be kept up to date with happenings…. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam.
We welcome back Ms O’Brien from maternity leave and would like to say a big “Thank You” to Mr O’Connell who now leaves us. We would like to thank Mr O’Connell for all his hard work and dedication to the school and wish him well in his future teaching career.
Since our last Newsletter we have another married couple on the staff and would like to congratulate Ms Hynes and Mr Mangan on their recent wedding.
On January 15th last we had the Official Opening of our “West Wing”. Our special thanks to Alex White, and Bishop Eamon Walsh who did the honours, and to Alan Shatter for his attendance. Our special thanks to our orchestra under the direction of Ms Ní Threasaigh, to our Parents’ Association for providing refreshments, Mrs Roisin Graham for our flower displays, the children in 3rd, 5th and 6th classes and the organising committee in the school. A wonderful morning was had by all. Photos of the event are on the school website.
As we approach the summer season a number of parents call to the school to request a signature on Passport forms. I would request that if you need a form signed that you phone the school for an appointment. It is also necessary for both parents to be present so that the Principal can witness their signatures.
A big “Thank You” to those who have returned Voluntary Subscriptions to the Board of Management. These go a long way to help with the everyday needs of the school and to get those “extra” resources for the children in our school. If you have not contributed, there is always time and every amount, no matter how small, is always welcome.
Many thanks to all who made our Christmas Concerts and Plays such a memorable experience. A special thanks also to our Parents’ Association who made a special request for Santa to visit all the children in the school. I am pleased to inform you that he has now returned to the North Pole with good memories of his visit to the school!!
Both the school and parents have found this to be an invaluable service during the past year especially during the periods of snow and ice. If you are not part of this service, and wish to be, please contact Jennifer in the school office. Please also inform Jennifer if you have changed your address or contact numbers.
Please note that school office hours are as follows:
Monday – Friday 8.50am – 10.30am
10.50am – 12.00 noon
12.30pm – 2.30pm
A “Thank You” to our P.A. who organised for Jungle Dave to visit the school recently.
Luckily no snakes escaped!!
Internet Monitoring & Social Media:
As mentioned in a previous letter I have been shocked and saddened by language and incidents of Internet messaging on ‘WhatsApp’, ‘Instagram’, ‘facebook’ and ‘snapchat’ by some of our pupils. One incident involved the invasion of the privacy of one of our teachers where derogatory comments were made and circulated. A number of parents had to be called to the school to discuss the monitoring of their child’s internet access. Following this, two pupils were suspended. We as a school cannot monitor or deal with issues involving YOUR child’s internet usage. However we will deal and implement our school policies if there is an incident affecting school staff, bullying of children or issues involving school life. In some incidents and depending on the severity of the comments, the Gardaí may be contacted. Please continue to monitor your child’s usage of social media.
Credit Union Quiz:
Well done to our U13 and Quiz Teams who took part in the recent League of Credit Union Table Quiz. A big thank you to their coaches Mr Timmons, Ms Hayes and Mr Nolan.
Our boys and girls Soccer and G.A.A. teams continue to play in their respective leagues and hopefully we will be able to add more silverware to our trophy cabinet. Thanks to
Ms Hynes, Mr Mangan, Mr Timmons, and Mr O’Connell for coaching our teams.
Our cohort of parent volunteers continue to work hard in our school Library to catalogue and update our books. Many thanks to all involved – we greatly appreciate your support.
World Book Day:
Thanks to everyone who donated “good as new” books to our Library. The response to our appeal was tremendous. A big thank you to our Literacy Co-ordinator, Ms Ní Threasaigh for organising this event.
Junior Infant Enrolments:
Applications for Junior Infants for 2016/2017 are now closed.
We would ask parents to be vigilant when approaching the school in cars and whilst reversing and parking. We have observed a number of speeding incidents as well as illegal parking. Our community Garda Niall Russell, has informed us that spot checks will be made in future months. Please do not park in the Yellow Box beside the barrier in the Church car park.
6th Class Graduation:
Our 6th Class Graduation will be on Monday, 27th June.
Our P.A. have once again been very busy with their fundraising activities. Mad Hair Day on February 17th was a great success and raised €850.00. Once again we ask for your support at their Table Quiz night to be held in St John’s GAA Club on Thursday April 21st April at 8.00pm.
Opening / Closing Times:
Please note the classrooms open to receive pupils at 8.50am each day. The school and Board of Management cannot accept responsibility for pupils arriving before that time. School finishes at 2.30pm each day (1.30pm for Junior and Senior Infants). There again the school and B.O.M. cannot accept responsibility for looking after children after these times. We have also received this information from our school Insurers, Allianz plc..
Marley’s Got Talent
Thursday, 28th April. It’s the one day in the year where the children can showcase their talents to the other children in the school.
Seachtain na Gaeilge:
Our annual Céilí will be held on Tuesday 15th March. On this day the children can wear ‘GREEN’ instead of their school uniform to celebrate our National week of festivities.
Many thanks to Mrs Kennedy and our cohort of Irish dancers for organising our festivities.
Sacrament of Reconciliation:
Congratulations to our children in 2nd class who recently took part in their First Confession.
A big “Míle Buíochas” to “Do This In Memory Of Me” team and teachers Ms Dempsey and Mr Reilly and S.N.A’s Mrs MacMahon and Mr Monaghan.
Confirmation: Friday 15th April – School Closing at 12 noon
First Holy Communion: Saturday 21st May
We would ask that you return Trocaire Boxes to the school by Wednesday, 16th March.
Thank you for your continuous support for this worthwhile charity.
