This year, our Green Schools Committee consists of eleven dedicated members, representing every class from 3rd to 6th. These hardworking students meet every Friday at 8:20 AM with Ms. Rossiter, Ms. Carthy, and Ms. Brennan to discuss upcoming initiatives, projects, and competitions. Each member not only represents their own class but also keeps a buddy class informed about Green Schools activities and events.
The committee plays an active role in maintaining our school’s green efforts. Every Tuesday and Thursday, they empty the school’s recycling bins, ensuring waste is properly managed. On Fridays, members speak at Tionól to update the school community on our progress and upcoming initiatives.
Currently, we are working towards our 9th Green Flag – the Global Citizenship Travel Flag. As part of this effort, we have been learning about the Global Goals and integrating them into our school activities. One of our key initiatives was the Big Travel Challenge in March, where we encouraged the entire school to walk, cycle, scoot, or park and stride. Committee members actively participated by meeting students at key walking points to promote sustainable travel.
In addition to promoting sustainable travel, the Green Schools Committee also led a successful initiative with the infant classes to reduce waste in the school and improve clean recycling. Through education and hands-on activities, they helped our youngest students understand the importance of proper recycling and minimising waste, making a positive impact on our overall waste management.
In the Autumn, the committee completed several litter-picking walks in the local community and teamed up with the Marley Grange Residents Association to participate in their annual Autumn Clean. Most recently, they have begun their Spring Clean litter walks, focusing on both the school grounds and the surrounding areas to keep our environment clean and green.
Looking ahead, in May, Coiste Glas will be teaming up with Coiste Cairde to run a Jersey Swap Day. This initiative aims to raise awareness about sustainable fashion by encouraging students to swap pre-loved jerseys instead of buying new ones. It’s a great way to promote reusing clothes while also celebrating our love for sports!
Throughout the year, the committee organises exciting competitions. A highlight was the Christmas Recycled Decoration Competition, where the winner had the honor of attending a ceremony at Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council!
We are incredibly proud of the Green Schools Committee for their commitment to making our school a greener, more sustainable place. Keep up the fantastic work!
