School Newsletter December 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Wow!!  It’s that time of the year again – Angels, Shepherds, Wise Men, Marys, Josephs, Donkeys and a few Santas will soon be heading to the school with parents and grandparents bearing cameras and digital camcorders.   We are all looking forward to the festive season here in the school and already the children are getting excited as Santa’s visit to the Divine Word NS approaches.

We would like to congratulate Ms Hynes and Mr Mangan on their recent engagement (to each other!!) and to Ms Murphy who will be celebrating her marriage on December 13th.

We wish Ms McGrane and Ms Bracken all the best as they commence their maternity Leave.

Our thanks also to Sr Veronica who continues to assist us with Learning Support. On a sadder note we wish to convey our condolences and sympathy to Jennifer, our school secretary, on the recent death of her mother, Lily Danaher (RIP), and to Mr Lynch on the recent death of his father, Peadar Lynch (RIP).

We have lots of news and a few dates for your diaries:

Children from 2nd to 6th will attend Mass on January 6th as it is the Feast of the Epiphany.

Building Project:

Good news!  The Builders to replace our Prefabs have been appointed and we are hoping that some activity will take place before we break up for the Christmas holidays.   Further details concerning access to school etc. will follow.   We hope that the building will be finished by mid June 2015.

In-School Sports:

At present the children in 5th and 6th classes are taking part in Tag Rugby organised by the Leinster IRFU with Coach Victor.    Carol our G.A.A. coach from St John’s Ballinteer is coaching 3rd classes.  Our thanks to Mrs Kernan for organising these sessions.

Croke Park:

We would like to congratulate our Boys Team who made it to the Finals of Corn Chumann na nGael in Croke Park.  The match ended in a draw, with the trophy being shared.  Even though there was a ‘dodgy’ penalty given to the opposing team, the game was well played by both teams.   Our fans also did us proud.  A big thank you to parents who helped with lifts to matches and a special “Míle Buíochas” to the coaches, Mr Conlon and Mr Timmons.

Christmas Fair:

Many thanks to our Parents’ Association and to all who helped and contributed to our Christmas Fair. The money raised goes a long way to enhancing the development of the curriculum for the children in the school.  There was a wonderful atmosphere in the school for this year’s Fair and we would like to thank our P.A. Committee especially the Chairperson, Hazel Mander for all her help and organisation.  Thanks also to the various sponsors for prizes and advertisements.  A special “Míle Buíochas” to our musical ensemble and to Ms Ní Threasaigh who provided a musical interlude and to the Dublin Saxophone Quartet for their fabulous musical contribution.

Voluntary Subscriptions:

Many thanks to those of you who have sent in Voluntary Subscriptions.   Once these arrive in the school they are sent on to the Treasurer of our Board of Management in batches.

It may therefore take a few weeks for an acknowledgement, so please be patient.

These subscriptions are of great help to the school.   This year we will receive approx. €82,110 from the Department of Education to fund cleaning, light, heat, insurance etc..  This is a reduction on last year’s grant.  Your voluntary subscription is of great help to keep our school running well on a daily basis.  Many thanks.

Cake Sale:

Well done to our two 6th classes who made a total of €2,026 on this year’s charity cake sale.  Thank you all for your baking and donation of cakes.  The chosen charity was Laura Lynn and a cheque was presented to them at our school assembly on Friday November 21st last.  Thanks also to Ms Murphy, Ms Hynes and Mrs McGrath for all their help in organising the event.   Well done Rang 6 !!

Science Exhibition:

Once again our Science Exhibition was a great success and I hope you enjoyed viewing all the experiments on the two ‘Open Days’.  A big “Míle Buíochas” to Ms O’Reilly for organising the event and to all the children who provided the science experiments.

Book Fair:

Our Book Fair took place during the week of November 24th and once again it was a great success.  A total of €4,219.40 was made at the Fair and the school will receive €2,531.64 of this in new books for the school library.   Thank you for all your support and to Mrs Kernan for organising the event and for all the staff and parents who also helped out at the Book Fair.

We would also like to thank our cohort of dedicated parents who help to update and tidy our Library on a regular basis.

School Closing Times:

The Board of Management wishes to remind you that parents and children should leave the school premises once classes have been dismissed.  Please do not congregate in the yard after school.

Junior Infant Classrooms:

We would ask parents/guardians of Junior Infants not to bring your child into the classroom in the mornings.  By now the children have settled into a routine and are able to enter the classroom on their own.   We appreciate your co-operation with this matter.

Traffic:

We would like to remind you once again to respect the traffic lines/signs around the school and to drive with caution on all approaches to the school.

Birthday Invitations and Cakes:

We would ask that birthday invitations not be distributed by children in the classrooms.

We would also advise that birthday cakes should not be sent into school.

Our School Website:

Please log onto our school website: www.divinewordns.ie for the latest news, information and copies of our newsletter. Our thanks to Ms McGrane for updating our website.

Santa’s Visit:

Our Parents’ Association has written to Santa in the North Pole to ask him to visit all the hard working children in the school. They recently got a reply so he has decided to visit us on Thursday 18thDecember.  I know that both children and teachers will be looking forward to this visit!!

And finally… On behalf of myself and all the staff in the Divine Word School, I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas. We look forward to working with you and your child(ren) again in 2015!!

Le gach dea-ghuí i gcomhair na Nollag is na h-athbhliana.

Yours sincerely

John Williams
