School Newsletter March 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the old Latin saying goes “Tempus Fugit”… Time flies!!   Welcome to the first (and overdue!!) Newsletter of 2015.  It seems a long time since we were making our way to the School Hall or Church for the Christmas festivities… and now we are preparing for our National Day celebrations.  As we commence 2015 I hope we can be assured of your continuing co-operation and support.   2015 will be an exciting time for the school as we will eventually dispose of all our prefabs and replace them with a new building… more of this a little later.  There are a number of items we would like to inform you of and some dates for your diaries!!

We would firstly like to extend our sincere condolences to Helen and Anna Swords on the death of a loving husband and father, Kieran Swords (RIP).  Kieran was a parent here in the school and over the years was very supportive to our school library and provided us with numerous books and advice on how to catalogue our library.   He will be sadly missed.   Our sympathies also to John, our school caretaker, on the death of his father, Sam Ritchie (RIP).

On a happier note we congratulate Ms McGrane on the birth of her daughter, Aoife and we wish Mr Conlon and Ms Mullin all the best as they get married at the end of the month… love stories begin in Divine Word NS..!!

New Building:

As you can see from the activity in the “old” basketball yard, the new building to replace our prefabs is well under way.  We are hoping it might be completed by the end of June.  This will be a great addition to the school and will mean we will see the end of prefabs to accommodate classes here in the school.  We may be looking for some “bodies” to help with furniture removal… watch this space!!

Voluntary Subscriptions:

A big “Thank You” to those who have returned Voluntary Subscriptions to the Board of Management.   These go a long way to help with the everyday needs of the school and to get those “extra” resources for the children in our school.  We have been lucky to get the grant to replace the prefabs with a new building….. this took a lot of hard work, energy and lobbying!!   However we just get the “minimum” grant to build….. it barely covers the cost of builder, architects, engineers and project managers.   Our next step is to look at “kitting out” the new building.   Providing simple items such as window blinds, extra storage, school specific flooring can cost a lot more and this is where the Voluntary Subscriptions will help to make the new building even more comfortable for our children.   If you have not contributed, there is always time and every amount, no matter how small, is always welcome.

Christmas Concerts:

Many thanks to all who made our Christmas Concerts and Plays such a memorable experience.   This was the fifth year with our new stage in operation and I think you will agree it is a wonderful asset.  A special thanks also to our Parents’ Association who made a special request for Santa to visit all the children in the school.  I am pleased to inform you that he has now returned to the North Pole with good memories of his visit to the school!.  Thanks also to our P.A. who funded the additional Microphones for the Concerts.

Text-A-Parent:

Both the school and parents have found this to be an invaluable service during the past year especially during the periods of snow and ice.  If you are not part of this service, and wish to be, please contact Jennifer in the school office.  Please also inform Jennifer if you have changed your number.

Monday – Friday 8.50am – 10.30am
  10.50am – 12.00 noon
  12.30pm – 2.30pm

Junior Infant Enrolments:

Applications for Junior Infants for 2015/2016 are now closed.

Traffic:

We would ask parents to be vigilant when approaching the school in cars and whilst reversing and parking. We have observed a number of speeding incidents as well as illegal parking.  Our community Garda Niall Russell, has informed us that spot checks will be made in future months.

Please do not park in the Yellow Box beside the barrier in the Church car park.

6th Class Graduation:

Our 6th Class Graduation will be on Thursday, 25th June.

Parents’ Association:

Our P.A. have once again been very busy with their fundraising activities and we would like to thank them for the huge effort they put into the Christmas Festive Morning which was a tremendous success.  Once again we ask for your support at their Table Quiz night to be held in St John’s GAA Club on Thursday April 30th at 8.00pm.  We will also host a Mad Hair Day on Monday March 16th.   (For me… that’s every day of the week!!).

Opening / Closing Times:

Please note the Classrooms open to receive pupils at 8.50am each day.  The school and Board of Management cannot accept responsibility for pupils arriving before that time.  School finishes at 2.30pm each day (1.30pm for Junior and Senior Infants). There again the school and BOM cannot accept responsibility for looking after children after these times.  This is also information received from our school Insurers, Allianz plc..

Marley’s Got Talent

Our re-scheduled for Marley’s Got Talent is Thursday, March 26th.

Seactain na Gaeilge:

Our annual Céilí will be held on Friday March 13th.  On both these days the children can wear ‘GREEN’ instead of their school uniform to celebrate our National week of festivities.
